Where Does The Name Charlotte Douglas International Airport Come From?
Charlotte city mayor Ben Elbert Douglas (1935 – 1941) was the mastermind of CLT airport. In 1935 Charlotte Chamber of commerce requested the city mayor to make an airport near Charlotte city due to the city’s increasing popularity day by day.
Works Progress Administration handed over the funds to the City authority and workers started the construction work for their first city airport in 1935. In 1936 the airport opened and began passenger service in 1937.
In 1954 the airport was renamed “Douglas Municipal Airport” to honor the former mayor of Charlotte Ben Elbert Douglas Sr. who oversees the airport construction.
